After breakfast at our hotel restaurant we will head for Kharkhorin (also called Karakorum), site of the 13th century capital of the Mongolian Empire created by Chinggis Khaan. Very little is left from this legendary city. In the 16th century, Mongolia's biggest Monastery was build from the ruins of Kharkhorin. Now Erdene Zuu Monastery are the remains of what once was a huge monastery of 100 temples and about 1.000 lamas residencing there.

We will explore the grounds of Erdene Zuu Monastery surrounded by its massive 400 m X 400 m walls. We will be guided around the 3 remaining temples: Dalai Lama, Zuu of Buddha and Lavrin Temple. We will also see the Turtle Rock and the Phallic Rock.

3rd day

We will leave Kharkhorin behind us and drive up the valley along the Orkhon River. In the late morning we will reach a green, with forest covered mountainous area. Here we will leave our jeeps and hike until the Orkhon Waterfalls. At the end of the day we will meet our vehicles that will bring us to Khorgo Khurem where we will spend the night in tents.

4th until 12th day

Today we will start our nine days trek through the Khangai Mountain. Here we will leave our vehicles and load our gear and food on pack horses.

We will first hike stream upwards along the Bituu River until we go through a pass that leads us to the Eight Lakes valley. This totally remote area was created by volcanic activities. It is locked between several extinct volcanoes and high mountain peaks. As it name says, the valley shelters a large number of small lakes, all interconnected by rivers. The lakes are supplied with fresh water running from the mountains.

The first lake we will reach is Khuis Lake. This lake is dotted with a large rock island. From there we will continue trekking to Shireet Lake. The largest of the eight lakes, Shireet Lake is the most picturesque.

We will leave the Eight Lakes valley for the Baruun River. We will trek through a pass from where we'll enjoy stunning views of the volcano craters and the picturesque eight lakes.

The Baruun River valley is forested and rocky. In parts it flows through canyons. On the way along the river we will enjoy the sound of streams and birdsong.

After having walked down along the Baruun River we will turn left and hike along the Suv River stream upwards.

At the source of the Suv River we will trek through the pass to reach Khug River. From here we will trek to the Erkhet Khairgan Mountain. This mountain with its peak reaching 3535 meters is the second highest mountain of the Khangai. We will climb the mountain end enjoy de wonderful views from the peak.

We will descend the mountain into the direction of the Tamch River. We will walk stream downwards and take the road that will lead us to the Uliastai River. We will walk along the Uliastai River until we will reach the Orkhon River where we will meet our vehicles.
